On April 17, 2024, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and the Council for International Relations–Greece, together with the Policy Journal and the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, organized the 1st International Conference on Maritime Security, entitled “The Dimensions of Maritime Security and their Role in Freedom of Navigation.” The conference was hosted at the Eugenides Foundation. The conference was attended by more than 400 people, with a strong presence of high-ranking officials from the armed and security forces, the shipping industry, universities and the world of journalism.
Welcome remarks were addressed by General Dimitrios Houpis, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral, Demetrios-Eleftherios Kataras. This was followed by the greetings of the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Union of Greek Shipowners and President of the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO), Dimitrios I. Fafalios and the President of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, Georgios D. Pateras.
The keynote address was delivered by the Minister of Defence, Nikos Dendias.
The panels covered a wide range of topics related to maritime security, inluding legal, technological and geopolitical aspects. Among the distinguished panelists were:
- Hiroyuki Yamada, Director of the Maritime Safety Division of the International Maritime Organization;
- Chris Parry, Rear Admiral Christopher John Parry, CBE is a British retired Royal Navy officer who was the first chair of the British Government’s Marine Management Organisation until 2011;
- Matthew Turpin, Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution/ Stanford University and Senior Advisor at Palantir Technologies.
